2009 - Dave LaRose
‘Reaching the Whole Child’ Award
Nurturing Growth, Inspiring Achievement, and Building Community describes the principle philosophy by which Superintendent Dave LaRose deserves recognition, for creating and shaping a district that truly educates the ‘whole child.’ South Kitsap School District’s “Student Success” goal is supported by the following value statements:
• Ensure High Levels of Learning for ALL Students
• Meeting the Developmental Needs of the Whole Child
• Engaging Families and Community is Essential to Student Success These values define the ‘why’ behind Mr. LaRose’s dedication, leadership and passion for embedding this philosophy into a variety of programs that are about relationships. These programs provide a working/learning environment that encourages, supports, challenges, celebrates and collaborates – to ensure high levels of learning for ALL students.
With Dave LaRose’s leadership, South Kitsap has implemented many programs that focus on the ‘whole child,’ supporting their district philosophy. Some of these programs are: 1) Ready for Kindergarten, a program that partners with families to provide free training, babysitting and take-home resources; 2) an after school program through Boys and Girls Club; 3) Backpacks for Kids, a program that provides food for kids on the weekends; 4) a free Summer Lunch Program; 5) PALs mentoring program; a schoolbased health clinic; and Kids at Hope, a program to instill hope in students. These programs have occurred through the leadership, open-mindedness and dedication of Dave LaRose’s vision.
