THE PRACTITIONER’S BEST FRIEND
Strategies for educators to facilitate
the sharing of new learning
- Teach the new learning to staff
- Model the new learning in the classroom or at a staff meeting
- Observe the new learning being implemented in the classroom
- Collect evidence of either teacher learning and/or student learning
- Complete a professional Learning plan prior to attendance so that time is focused, e.g. What GLE are you focusing on?
- Focus on one new idea or learning at a time.
- If attending with a team, coordinate attendance at breakout
sessions.
- Explicitly show the connection of the PD event to the school or
district improvement plan.
- Ask teachers (administrators, etc) to articulate how the new
learning makes them better at their craft and/or how it will effect
student learning.
- Make use of Tony Wagner’s Four Steps:
- Identify target
- Identify how to infuse into system
- Assess – Does it work?
- Assess – What has to change? Needs to be tweaked?
